Auditions begin December 8th!

Auditions will be held at the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center, 6161 NW 22 Avenue, Miami 33142 on Monday, December 8 and Tuesday, December 9 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for "Sisters!, A Celebration of the Human Spirit", by Jerry Ayers.  Auditions will be held in Broward County at the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center, 2650 Sistrunk Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, 33311 on Monday, December 15 and Tuesday, December 16 from 6:00pm to 7:30pm.

An adaptation based on the book We Are Your Sisters by Dorothy Sterling, written by Jerry Ayers, Sisters! is being produced for the first time in the Southeast region by Gail Willingham and the African American Performing Arts Community Theatre (AAPACT).  An ensemble cast of adult and youth African American females and two adult or youth African American males are needed to fill the roles of prominent historical figures as Sarah Forten, Ellen Craft, Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman, as well as other keys parts in this dramatic work.  Prepared songs and monologues are welcome.

Opening February 26, 2009, Sisters! is a powerful theatrical representation of the essence of the experience of being black and being a woman during the 19th century in America.  This compelling historical dramatic stage play tells the rich and powerful stories of women during the time of slavery, through the transition of emancipation and into the unexpected hardship of being “free.”

For more information on the audition, please contact the AAPACT office at aapact@yahoo.com.

Sisters! will be presented at the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center, located at 6161 NW 22 Avenue, Miami 33142.  Founded in 1975 to serve as a nesting ground for emerging talent in the performing and visual arts, the African Heritage Cultural Arts Center is a vital part of our community and the ideal location for this inspirational and history-inspired production.   Performance dates are February 26 to March 22, 2009; Fridays and Saturdays at 8:00 p.m. and Sundays at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are $20. Local schools are encouraged to offer this production as an educational field trip; tickets are $7 for students.  Groups of 10 or more receive a discounted ticket price of $10.

Let the Marketing Begin!

The blog is up (as you can see!), and the listing has been submitted to the Miami Herald's Season of the Arts.  Marketing efforts will continue with a Save the Date flyer, using images from an upcoming skit performance.

I finished reading the stage play for this production, and I must tell you that this is a very powerful work, one that contains several important stories and perspectives.  The cast will be made up of women (mostly) and I can already begin to imagine the power that will emanate from the stage during some of the more poignant scenes.

Stay tuned for more updates on the progress, and maybe a taste of what's to come.
